Researchers infected epithelial and blood cells with cold viruses under controlled laboratory conditions. Heel reported that cells that were previously treated with certain homeopathically prepared medications were more resistant and released more interferon than untreated cells. Interferon type I (IFN-I) stimulates the body’s innate defense mechanisms to react swiftly and fight the penetrating viruses.

Nux-vomica

A research team at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson (USA) recently examined the effects of one dose of placebo versus either Coffea Cruda 30c or Nux Vomica 30c in relatively healthy young adult human subjects with a past history of coffee-induced insomnia.

They used polysomnography (PSG), which can distinguish divergent findings, if present, between subjective sleep complaints and objective all-night sleep recording assessments in certain types of insomnia.

The authors refer to multiple studies on healthy animals that have shown measurable effects on sleep of three different homeopathic medicines at potencies prepared to a dilution past Avogadro’s number (Histamine, Coffea Cruda, and Nux Vomica) compared with placebo. In these studies each medicine at a 30c potency altered sleep patterns notably with differential effects on electroencephalographic delta frequency (0.5– 2.5 Hz) power during sleep, while other investigators have demonstrated effects of Nux Vomica 30c on alcohol-induced sleep time in mice.

The authors argue that the relative lack of objective measures to evaluate homeopathy in human subjects has thus far hindered advances in both clinical care and research. Polysomnography, in their opinion, can offer a potentially valuable tool for homeopathic investigations.

In this trial young adults of both sexes (ages 18–31) were included with above-average scores on standardized personality scales for either cynical hostility or anxiety sensitivity (but not both) and a history of coffee-induced insomnia. At-home polysomnographic recordings were obtained on successive pairs of nights once per week for a total of eight recordings (nights 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23).

Subjects (N = 54) received placebo pellets on night 8 (single-blind) and verum pellets on night 22 (double-blind) in 30c doses of one of two homeopathic medicines, Nux Vomica or Coffea Cruda. Subjects completed daily morning sleep diaries and weekly Pittsburgh sleep quality index scales, as well as profile of mood states scales at bedtime on polysomnography nights.

This study demonstrated that the homeopathic medicines significantly increased PSG total sleep time and NREM, as well as awakenings and stage changes. Findings are similar though not identical to those reported in animals with the same medicines. Possible mechanisms include initial disruption of the nonlinear dynamics of sleep patterns by the homeopathic medicines.

The study reveals that certain high potency homeopathic remedies have preferentially elevated cytotoxic effects on breast adenocarcinoma cells compared with cells derived from normal breast epithelium. The experiments were conducted in triplicate and repeated at least twice in each case of a remedy. The homeopathic medicines tested included:  Carcinosin, 30C; Conium maculatum, 3C; Phytolacca decandra, 200C and Thuja occidentalis, 30C The strongest effects were found from Carcinosin and Phytolacca, remedies that are well documented in the homeopathic literature for their beneficial effects in patients with cancer.

The researchers concluded, “the ultra-diluted natural homeopathic remedies investigated in this study offer the promise of being effective preventive and/or therapeutic agents for breast cancer and worthy of further study.”.

Homeopathy is a safe, gentle, effective system of medicine that seeks to stimulate the body’s own natural healing capacity.

Conventional medicine typically views symptoms as something wrong and tries to suppress or eliminate them. By contrast, homeopathy considers symptoms the vocabulary of disease and the body’s attempt to restore balance, however uncomfortable the effort. The goal is to understand and treat the root cause for any problems, not to mask their existence.

Homeopathy looks at individuals, not diseases. For example, no two colds are alike. One may come on slowly and be runny; another may come on quickly and include a dry cough. In one, the person may be irritable and want to be left alone and in another, he or she will want comfort and company. A well-trained homeopath most likely will treat each cold with different remedies.

This healing system is based on the philosophy that the body, mind and emotions are not separate entities, but fully integrated. The homeopath considers all aspects of a patient’s being – physical, emotional and mental – when seeking and prescribing a remedy.

History in the U.S.

In 1825, several physicians who had studied in Europe brought homeopathy to the United States. Soon, other doctors followed their lead. By the mid-1800′s, several medical colleges taught homeopathy, growing to 22 within a few decades. Faced with a popular rival, the medical establishment soon drove homeopathy into the background. By the 1940s, homeopathy was no longer officially taught in the U.S.

In recent decades, homeopathy has enjoyed a resurgence. Physicians don’t have treatments for many diseases. Some patients find homeopathy when forced out of the medical world. Others seek more holistic approaches to healing or don’t want the side effects of drug therapy, a common western way of suppressing symptoms.

In May 2006, Prince Charles addressed the World Health Assembly in Geneva to argue for homeopathy and its kindred therapies. He urged a return to remedies “rooted in ancient traditions that intuitively understood the need to maintain balance and harmony with our minds, bodies and the natural world.”

It describes a recent paper published by Professor Luc Montagnier a French virologist who co-discovered HIV and who won the Nobel Prize in 2008.

The research described in this paper may explain how and why homeopathic medicines maintain their biological activity in extreme dilution.
